Candidates head into Brazil presidential debate without Lula

Candidates for Brazil's upcoming election headed into the first debate of the campaign season on Thursday.Despite being jailed in April on a corruption conviction and sentenced to 12 years in prison, Lula has been nominated by his Workers Party to run. However, a Brazilian court rejected a petition from the former president to attend the debate.

Offensive comments against homosexuals, blacks and indigenous people by the candidate have generated controversy in the country . Brazil's former finance minister is also running for the country's top job. He has touted the economic success of Brazil during his time in Lula's government as proof of his credentials to take on the presidency. Lula has outpolled both so far .
