Catalan separatists call for release of imprisoned leaders

11 September 2018

Hundreds of Catalan separatists marched in Barcelona on Monday to demand the release of imprisoned secessionist political and grassroots leaders. Catalan President and parliament speaker made their way from parliament to the government building where thousands of independence supporters were gathered to show their support for imprisoned leaders and those in exile.

Hundreds of thousands of Catalans are expected to fill the streets of Barcelona on Tuesday for the Spanish region's first commemorative day since its leader declared independence last year and pitched the country into constitutional crisis. This year, the region's leader has called for a mass rally in support of his bid for a binding referendum on independence.
