President U Htin Kyaw attended Yangon Children's Literature Festival and Book Fair which began on Saturday at No. (6), Basic Education High School, Botahtaung. Khine Mar Nay Linn reports.
The festival aims to assist in the development of future leaders and to help the children nurture reading habit with the fun activities.
Together with the President U Htin Kyaw, union ministers for information, education, health and sports and ethnic affairs as well as Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein attended the festival and fair opening ceremony.
The President and party also visited booths including Sayargyi Min Thu Won books collection. Union Minister for the information Dr. Pe Myint said the festival will bring “happy environment” to the children.
Union Minister for Information Dr. Pe Myint said "This is also to help the children have fun. We should create a happy environment for the children so that they will enjoy living in the literature community by getting used to buying and reading books."
The festival is open to all including the students from private schools, vocational schools as well as the children with disabilities. A series of programmes including scientific laboratory tests and many other kinds of performances showing the students’ abilities and creation are included. Also, such activities as sports, as well as art and quiz competitions, are part of the festival.
Grade-5 Student Myat Noe Pwint of B.E.H.S (2) Latha said "I like to read stories and fairy tales. Here, I'm interested in painting and folding papers – I’d like to play them."
Parents and teachers welcome the festival, hoping that it will be held annually.
Parent Nwe Nwe Win said "I saw about the festival on TV, and I think the event can help the children expand their knowledge as well. There are lots of activities here and I saw the children like them indeed. I hope such a festival will continue for years."
Teacher Myintzu Shwe from B.E.H.S (5) North Okkalapa said "I brought my Grade-4 students to enjoy the festival. This time, during school hours, our school officially allows only Grade-4 students to come here. I believe the children will have fun and learn a lot from here."
Yangon Children’s Literature and Book Fair is jointly organised by the Ministry of Information, the Ministry of Education and the Yangon Region Government. It’s set to be held till Monday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m and expected to be the most crowded one among such festivals held in the places including Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw.
