China's foreign ministry made a diplomatic complaint to Australia following comments made by Australia's Minister for International Development and the Pacific. According to the Lowy Institute, China has contributed $2.3 billion dollars of aid to the Pacific over the past decade.

The Australian minister told a local Australian newspaper that China is constructing useless infrastructure projects in the Pacific. At a daily news briefing, a spokesman of Chinese foreign ministry called these comments "full of ignorance and prejudice".
