Family visits Chilean man jailed in Peru for alleged child trafficking

7 September 2018

The parents of a Chilean national detained in Peru on child trafficking charges visited their son in his Lima prison on Thursday .They are hopeful that prosecutors will accept their son's defence that he acted as a surrogate. Jorge Tovar was arrested in Peru along with his wife for child trafficking.

The pair were trying to board a flight to their home in Chile with two babies they say were born to a surrogate. The Chileans were stopped by Peruvian authorities at Lima's airport before boarding a flight to Santiago. The couple claims the babies were born to a surrogate mother and that they followed all the procedures suggested by a Lima fertility clinic including inscribing the babies with civil authorities.

Tovar's parents visited the couple at the Sarita Colina prison just outside Lima and said their son was relieved to hear that the babies are safe.
