With politics being a family business in Pakistan, ousted leader Nawaz Sharif has had to look no further than his brother, Shahbaz, for a successor. The Supreme Court on July 28, 2017 disqualified Nawaz Sharif from office over undeclared income and ordered a criminal investigation into him and his family. But Shahbaz's accession is almost guaranteed due to the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party's hefty majority in parliament.
First, though, Shahbaz needs to be made eligible to take over by winning a parliamentary by-election expected within two months.
