Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda won the Palme d'Or at Cannes for "Shoplifters". The movie wowed audiences for its delicate portrayal of family life and surprising plot twists. He said he realised his film "Shoplifters"  had "something special" from the moment it was screened. The director has won prizes at the festival in previous years. The top award defied speculation that the Palme might go to a female director. Three strong female contenders in a year when the Hollywood sex scandal was the talk of the town.
