Korean Peninsula: Roundtable Conference On Korean Peninsula Held

The roundtable conference on the situation of the Korean Peninsula was took place in Yangon, Monday.

The historic inter-Korean summit took place on 27 April 2018, and the unprecedented US-North Korea summit was held successfully in Singapore on 12 June. It is timely to talk about the recent situation on the Korean Peninsula among ASEAN ISIS by inviting experts from societies.

Ambassador, Embassy of the republic of Korea, Lee Sang-Hwa said “.....We believe that to make current process of building a prominent peace regions in Korean Peninsula that required the united and endeavors are collective strengths not only within the Korean peninsula but also from the international community’s…”

Permanent secretary from the ministry of foreign affairs stated that the Panmunjom  declaration for peace, prosperity and Unification of the Korean Peninsula signed on 27 April 2018, and the recent agreement signed between trump and Kim on 12 June 2018, will pave the way for peace, stability and prosperity of the region and the world.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Naypyitaw), Myint Thu said “ASEAN stands ready to play a constructive role in contributing to peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula. In fact, ASEAN has proven to be the right platform for dialogue and negotiations in finding a viable solution on the Korean Peninsula. We will have better understanding on the development on the Korean Peninsula at the end of the conference.”

The delegations from ASEAN member countries also discuss their perspective on the Korean issue, possible contribution to peace on Korean Peninsula and the next steps and implications for ASEAN.

Chairman, Myanmar- ISIS, Nyunt Maung Shein said “There are political progresses in the Korean Peninsula within two Koreas. So we made round discussion on the situation of Korean peninsula and reconciliation process between the two Koreas. This is an open discussion with the experts from the different societies.”

This roundtable conference can be a great opportunity to understand the situation and seek roles for ASEAN ISIS for a durable peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
