Libya deports 142 illegal migrants to Gambia

2 January 2018

More than a hundred illegal migrants from Gambia were sent home from a Libya as part of the International Organization for Migration's voluntary return programme. The programme was carried out to ease severe overcrowding in the country's detention centres.  IOM has stepped up the rate at which it flies migrants home from Libya. It has evacuated up to 15,000 in the final month of 2017. However, many are still being held in camps in Libya in conditions rights groups describe as inhumane.
