Mexico's interior minister steps down

11 January 2018

The President of Mexico announced yesterday that the Interior Minister was stepping down from his post. The minister was appointed to the job in 2012 to oversee government responsibilities including security, migration and human rights.

He had been one of the leading contenders for the PRI's presidential nomination. But the party is backing the former Finance Minister for the July election. Resigning his Cabinet post will enable the interior minister to run for the Mexican Senate during the next administration.
