Public transport workers clash with police in Lima

Tear gas was fired in clashes between drivers of cargo vehicles and police in Lima on Thursday, in protests over toll increases. Protesters began blocking the roads from 6 a.m. (1100 G.M.T.) after the national Ombudsman Office questioned the toll increases. Some one hundred protesters took part in the demonstration on the Panamericana North highway, throwing rocks and burning tires, as police responded with tear gas. Tear gas was first launched around 8.30 a.m. (1330 G.M.T.) after the police presence was reinforced, with the additional presence of tanks.
