Railway Upgrading Project: Yangon-Mandalay Railways Improvement Project Phase 1

The Contract Signing Ceremony of CP 102; Civil & Tracks Works, and Signalling & Telecommunication Works for Bago-Nyaung Le Bin Section between Myanma Railways and TEKKEN-RN Joint Venture was held on Thursday in Nay Pyi Taw. The contract is under the Yangon-Mandalay Railways Improvement Project Phase 1.

Senior General Manager (Inspection), Myanma Railways, Ba Myint said “This project will take about 4 years. 166 miles of the 386-mile long Yangon- Mandalay railway will be upgraded with the assistance from Japanese engineers. Upon completion of the project, there will be no joints along the Yangon- Mandalay railway, and passengers will get a safe smooth ride by taking only 8 hours from Yangon to Mandalay.” 

The Senior General Manager urged the representatives of TEKKEN-RN to complete the project in timely manner, pledging officials from Myanmar Railways will cooperate.

Senior Representative, Japan International Cooperation Agency, Kataro Nishigata said “This Yangon-Mandalay railways project is to improve some infrastructure from the Yangon to Mandalay. We phrasing in this project in 2 phases …one is Yangon to Taungoo and then next is Taungoo to Mandalay. Actually this package successfully imported to Japanese Contract into the project. So I think they have many experiences to construct these railways over the city smoothly, implementation, and construction project.”

General Manager, International Division (Myanmar Branch), Seiji Yamamoto said “I heard Myanma Railway is producing by own workers. In this project, first project for we using Myanmar contractors that’s why we have two or three partners in Myanmar. We contract to handover our technique to Myanmar engineers…”

Phase one of Yangon-Mandalay Railways improvement Project has 8 contract packages. It includes CP 101-103 and 13 companies purchased the Tender Documents and 2 bidders submitted their bid proposal. TEKKEN-RN won the tender.
