The 2nd Regions and States Vovinam championship kicked off on Monday at Wanna Theikdi Indoor Stadium in Nay Pyi Taw.
This is the second edition of Regions and States Vovinam championship organized by the Ministry of Health and Sports and Myanmar Vovinam Association. The 1st one was held in the fiscal year of 2016-2017. The championship is to improve the skills of players as well as to turn out the new talented outstanding players from the States and Regions.
Joint Secretary, Myanmar Vovinam Association, Aung Naing Oo said “Myanmar started to participate in Vovinam in 2013. We grabbed gold medals in 2013 Sea Games and other regional and international events. We are now also training for the 5th Southeast Asia Vovinam games in July and ASEAN university games in December. This competition will turn out new talented players to compete in international level competitions.”
The aged limitation is between from 17 to 28 years of aged and divided into performance and fighting events. Vovinam is practiced with and without weapons. It is based on the principle of between hard and soft. It includes training of the body as well as the mind.
50-55 Kilo (Women) Fighting, May Zin Oo said “I won gold medals in Olympic games. I will try my best in this championship. Vovinam is a bit different from our Myanmar martial arts. I will try and train hard to promote our sports standard.”
This time, the championship saw an increase of competitors. In addition to medals, trophies for best men and women players as well as for best men and women teams will be presented.
45-50 Kilo (Men) Fighting, Phyo Htet Ko Ko said “I won a gold medal last year. I have no international experience so I want to compete in ASEAN university games. So, I am now trying and training hard.”
More than 90 players from 8 teams are competing in 5 categories till the 18th of January.
