Tokyo 2020 ceremonies to focus on rebirth

31 July 2018

The opening and closing ceremonies at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will focus on themes relating to 're-birth' to reflect Japan's recent history, newly-appointed creative director said on Tuesday. He did not give much away about the ceremonies.

But he did say modern technologies would be used to visually communicate Japan's "traditional ways." Over the last two decades, the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics and Paralympics have become a medium for the host nation to show off its history and culture, and to communicate key messages. The Tokyo Olympics will run from July 24 to August 9 in 2020 with the Paralympics following from August 26 to September 6.
