Volcano erupts at Japanese ski resort, several injured by falling rocks, one missing in avalanche

23 January 2018

In central Japan, an erupting volcano rained down on skiers at a mountain resort today. Nearly a dozen skiers were engulfed in the avalanche.  Six of those trapped were members of Japan's Ground Self Defence Force engaged in training manoeuvres, the Defence Ministry said. Japanese media reported that as many as 15 people were injured and one skier was missing. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said two people were seriously injured apparently due to the volcanic rocks. But further details have yet to be confirmed.
