Chinese President Xi Jinping called Monday for greater world cooperation against COVID-19 during a speech at a virtual gathering hosted by the World Economic Forum in Geneva, Switzerland.

Xi urged other world powers to disregard "ideological antagonism and politicizing or weaponizing economic, scientific and technological issues." The Chinese leader hailed his country's efforts to share vaccines, fight climate change and promote development at home and abroad.

He promised a "safe and splendid" Winter Olympics in China next month. WEF's online event is being held in place of its annual January meeting in Davos because of health concerns linked to the coronavirus pandemic.
