Apple Mac's 40th birthday comes when the global PC market has sagged with the rise of smartphone lifestyles. It’s been four decades since Apple debuted the Macintosh.

Dag Spicer, senior curator of the CHM said "Initially, the Mac was aimed at professional users, that is, people who did the creative arts like writers and graphic artists and so on. And that community has pretty well stayed with the Mac over that time. But the Mac's market has dramatically increased where it's basically used by everyone, it is very popular with students, for example, and has become a powerful global brand in itself."

In celebration, the Computer History Museum has one of the first Mac computers, including the keyboard and mouse, on display in a pop-up exhibition called "The Apple Mac @ 40".
