Death toll from Turkiye quake rises to 360

A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southern Turkiye and northern Syria early Monday. At least 360 were killed and hundreds injured, and the toll was expected to rise. On both sides of the border, residents jolted out of sleep by the pre-dawn quake rushed outside on a cold, rainy and snowy winter night.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered about 33 kilometers from Gaziantep, a major city and provincial capital. It was centered 18 kilometers deep, and a strong 6.7 aftershock rumbled about 10 minutes later. On the Syrian side of the border, the quake smashed opposition-held regions that are packed with some 4 million people displaced from other parts of Syria.
