Efforts for more Power: Over 70% of ThaHtay Hydropower project completed

ThaHtay Hydropower project on ThaHtay creek about 12-mile northeast of Thandwe Township in Rakhine State is being implemented and over 70% of the project has now been completed. 

The costs of the project were funded with the Union Budget – under the Ministry of Electric Power, Department of Hydropower Implementation has been implementing the project. The project was established in the 2008-2009 fiscal year and now 73.29% of the project was completed in October, 2022.

Official, Department of Hydropower Implementation, said "Among the seven main construction processes of the ThaHtay Hydropower Plant, river diversion work and construction of water intake building were completed in 2020 and the rest of the processes are almost completed. Our country is rich in water resource. The contribution of hydropower to electricity production is the renewable energy source and producing electricity will be low cost. We have been implementing hydropower projects with the lowest environmental impact which will benefit the ethnic people."

It’s reported that the ThaHtay Hydropower project will be completed in the 2025-2026 Financial Year. Upon completion, 386 million KW hours of electricity can be distributed to states and regions including Rakhine State via the National Grid.
