Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has made a speech to mark the 78th anniversary of the Battle of Okinawa, one of the deadliest of World War Two. The prime minister visited the Peace Memorial Park in Itoman City and attended a memorial ceremony after offering flowers at a national cemetery for war dead.

Kishida said in his speech that peace and prosperity enjoyed by Japanese today are built on the loss of lives in the war, and a history of hardships suffered by the prefecture. Hundreds of people attended the ceremony and observed a moment of silence.
