Lebanese security forces fired water cannons and tear gas at anti-government protesters on Saturday who are trying to breach a security barricade outside government headquarters in Beirut. A planned march under the slogan "We won't pay the price" began on Saturday peacefully but then saw a repeat of violence that has marked recent protests against a political class. Lebanon is hoping a new government which has formed on Tuesday can win the financial support of donors it needs to climb from a deep economic emergency. The country has been without effective government since Saad al-Hariri, the country's main Sunni Muslim leader and a traditional ally of the West and Gulf states, resigned as premier in October under public pressure.
