

The leaders of South Korea and Japan agreed to accelerate efforts to mend ties frayed over Japan's past colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula as they held their countries' first summit talks in nearly three years on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, both governments announced Thursday.
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary said that the leaders shared the view that they would instruct the diplomatic authorities to accelerate the ongoing consultations on based on Japan's consistent position.South Korea and Japan have been seeking better ties since South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s inauguration in May.The two leaders meeting was the first summit between the countries since December 2019.
