Mexico's native "walking fish", the Axolotl, has become the unofficial mascot of Chapultepec Zoo in the country's capital. To celebrate its 100th anniversary, the zoo has opened a new "amphibiary" in the building that used to house the elephants, and the four-legged salamander is the main attraction.

It plans to raise awareness among visitors about the Axolotl ecosystem and conservation and also shows more wetland flora and fauna. Zoo staff say the Axolotl may be small in size, but it is very special. Mexico is home to 17 types of the amphibian, which is celebrated annually on 1 February, National Axolotl Day.
