More than 10,000 small fish were released on Thursday in rivers to improve the water environment on Shanghai's Chongming Island. The district's village committee also signed agreements with residents to encourage them to protect the rivers.

In the morning, the staff were dropping a net of small fish into the river near the No. 1 River, Hongxing Village, Chongming District, Shanghai. An official said the river had been desilted, and the fries will help improve the water quality. The water department selected a total of 230 sites to release nearly 3,000 kg of fish fry, a total of more than 10,000 fish fry.

At the bank of a river, the maintenance personnel found two nets, which were demolished and confiscated on the spot. The village committee signed self-governance agreements with villages to encourage each one to take part in river protection. The Yangtze River Protection Law took effect in 2021. More than 5 million fries have been released in Chongming over the past 30 years to replenish depleted fish stocks in its rivers.
