Card payment system has been installed on over 1900 buses under YBS system running in downtown Yangon. For the smooth transportation of the passengers, YRTC implements a programme to apply the YPS card system widely like before.

The cashless payment system is more convenient and secure for passengers as they don’t need to find small notes and it can prevent COVID-19 infections from the notes, according to an official of Yangon Region Transport Committee (YRTC).

Lyan Cin Mang, Joint-Secretary, Yangon Region Transport Committee (YRTC) said “For the safety and good service of YBS system, Yangon Payment Service Company and Asia Starmar Transport Intelligent Co., Ltd signed Yangon Payment Service B.O.T agreement on 12th March 2019 to implement YBS card payment system. Bus regulator machines were installed at 36 bus lines of YUPT, YPBC, Bandoola, Ludu Mate Swe and JYCT companies. At that time, over 60,000 cards were sold and of them, over 30,000 were active.”

The company launched card system at the two years of YRTA on 16 January 2019. However, YRTA was abolished in May 2021 and YRTC is newly formed. Yangon Region Government has assigned YRTC to implement again the Yangon Payment card system. At present, YRTC and Asia Starmar Company are planning to sign the second amendment of the contract, an official added.

Lyan Cin Mang, Joint-Secretary, Yangon Region Transport Committee (YRTC) said “The price of YPS cards is at 2000 kyats and the consumers can deposit from a minimum of 1,000 kyats to a maximum of 50,000 kyats. For the initial period, for the smooth transportation of the passengers, it is arranged to pay the cards free of charge if they deposit only 3000 kyats.”

Twenty-five more shops will be extended to sell YPS cards. At present, 98 bus lines are operating 2,700 buses. The number of daily commuters has been estimated at over 500,000.
