Study Tour: Writers From Mekong Countries Visit Bago

The writers from Mekong River Countries who attended the 10th Mekong River Literature Award Presentation ceremony made a study to Bago, Sunday,

aiming to learn Myanmar historic place, culture, tradition and customs.

During the study tour, the delegation visited Shwe Mawdaw Pagoda, Kanbawzathadi Golden Palace and Archaeology Museum in Bago.  

Writers from Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and China (Yunnan Province) arrived in Myanmar on 11th October to attend the Mekong River Literature Award Presentation Ceremony and held meeting with Myanmar counterparts.

An official from Myanmar Writers Association said they began the trip from Yangon at 8:00 am and they would bring the delegates to the remarkable places in Bago.

Vice Chairman, Myanmar Writers Association, Myinmu Maung Naing Moe said “We left from Yangon at 8:00 am. We explained about buildings along the way. Firstly, we paid homage to Shwemawdaw Pagoda. We explained about the history of Shwemawdaw Pagoda and about Bago to the delegates. And then, we will take them Kanbawza Thadi Golden Palace of King Bayint Naung. After that, we will show Bago Archaeology Museum for their study.”

During the excursion, a delegate from Laos said he can learn the daily life of Myanmar people, history and richness of Myanmar culture from the trip.

President, Lao Writers' Association (LWA), Thongbay Photh said “First of all, I'd like to thank Myanmar Government and Myanmar Writers Association for inviting us to join this meeting. It's really important meeting between six countries of Mekong River. Today trip is very nice. We can see … Myanmar Culture and Myanmar is really rich of Culture. I think we can see the people of daily life.”

The delegates from Mekong Countries arrived in Myanmar to attend the 10th Mekong River Literature Award Presentation ceremony. It was the very first event hosted by Myanmar.

In the evening of that day, a dinner was served to commemorate visiting delegation from Mekong countries at the Karaweik Palace in Yangon. Yangon Region Chief Minister U Pyo Min Thein, officials from Myanmar Writers Association, writers from Mekong River Countries and concerned officials joined a commemorative dinner.

The Mekong River Literature Award was established in 2007 at the initiative of the Writers Association of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, to promote friendly relations and cooperation amongst writers in the region. Myanmar joined as a member at the 5th Mekong River Literature Awarding Ceremony. The awarding ceremony is annually held and the six countries take turns to host the event and at least the two best writers of each country are chosen to receive the award. Cambodia will be the host of next year’s event.
