The 2022 World AIDS Day was observed at the Ministry of Health, Nay Pyi Taw at 9 AM with the attendance of Union Minister for Health, Deputy Minister, Director General and officials, related ministries, partnership organizations, people-based communities and responsible persons.
In his remark at the event, the Union Minister Dr. Thet Khaing Win said that the World AIDS Day is observed yearly on the day of December 1st with the intention of eradicating AIDS completely from the public health problem with the active participation of the people.
This year’s motto commemorated the World AIDS Day is “Equalize” to boldly recognize and address the inequalities which are holding back progress in ending AIDS; and equalize access to essential HIV services.
At an estimate calculation, the HIV AIDS infected over 270,000 people at the end of 2021. it means the percentage of positive tested at (0.64). The new infection was highest in year 2000 with the rate of 30,000 individuals.
But in 2021, the rate decreased to 11,000 infections. Among the HIV AIDS infection vulnerable people groups such as people who Inject drugs into their artery, homosexual men, sex workers and their partners, the infection rate is higher and the over 50% of infections during 2021 are from those targeted groups.
The regions with the highest rate of infection are Kachin State, Shan State (North), Mandalay Region, Sagaing Region and Yangon Region. The major fund support for combating HIV AIDS infection in Myanmar is the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization also provides.
The Ministry of Health provided 16 million USD for the procurement of HIV treatment medicine (ART) and medical equipments during the 202202023 fiscal year etc.
Next, U Nay Lin on behalf of the people-based communities clarified the importance of HIV AIDS Day and hopes and expectations of the people-based communities and expressed words of thanks to the government and the ministry of health for the arrangement not to be shortage of medicines for the HIV patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Then, the union minister, deputy minister and officials from the related ministries awarded the students who won the prizes in the essay, painting and cartoon contests held commemorating the World AIDS Day and viewed the display booths marking the commemoration, it’s learnt.
