Central Committee meeting: Cent. Comm. on Rights of IP held meeting

Central Committee on Rights of Intellectual Property held its meeting (2/2023) at the Ministry of Commerce in Nay Pyi Taw on Monday morning in the presence of Chairman of the Central Committee, Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Transport and Communications General Mya Tun Oo.

Speaking on the occasion, the Central Committee Chairman Deputy Prime Minister Union Minister said that the meeting of the Central Committee on Rights of Intellectual Property is scheduled to be held twice a year, according to the decision of the previous meeting (1/2022) and this is the 2nd time for 2023-2024 fiscal year.

After Myanmar joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), it became necessary to establish a new system of the Rights of Intellectual Property met with the international norms, and four copyright laws namely the Trademark Copyright Law, the Industrial Design Copyright Law, the Invention Copyright Law, and the Literary and Artistic Copyright Law were enacted in 2019 in order to meet this needs, the Union Minister added.

Among these enacted copyright laws, the Trademark Copyright Law came into effect on 1st April 2023 and the official acceptance of trademark registrations have been granted since 26th April 2023. Also, the Industrial Design Copyright Law and the Literary and Artistic Copyright Law took into effect on 31st October 2023, and preparations are being made to accept copyright applications, the Union Minister said. Also, 2023 is a year that the new copyright law came into force.He reiterated that exercising copyright protection system could help to create highly innovative and competitive public and private sectors.

The Union Minister emphasized the needs to make all-round efforts for the copyright sector development. He urged all to make concerted efforts to become Myanmar as a leading country in regional copyright development, and the relevant ministries and non-governmental organizations involved in the newly established Central Committee on copyrights to play their respective roles in implementing a copyright protection system.

Then, Vice Chairman of the Central Committee and Union Minister for Commerce U Tun Ohn gave a briefing on the issues related to the development of the copyright system.

After that, the Secretary of the Central Committee Deputy Minister U Min Min reported the work implementation upon the resolutions of the Central Committee meeting (1/2023).

Next, Joint Secretary of Central Committee Director General Dr. Moe Moe Naing read out the orders submitted to the Central Committee Meeting (2/2023). And, the central committee members gave briefings on work proceedings as per the ministry respectively.

Then, the draft resolution of the Central Committee Meeting (2/2023) was approved. And, the meeting was concluded after delivering closing remarks by the Union Minister.
