The Ministry of Electric Power held its work coordination meeting on solar power plant on Friday at the Ministry in Nay Pyi Taw.

Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister U Nyan Tun stressed that hydropower accounted for 47.6% of the electricity generation mix, while solar energy (Solar and RE) followed with 1.7% and thermal energy (Gas+Coal) with 50.7% respectively.

According to the National Electricity Master Plan (NEMP-2014), it is targeted to generate 3,070 MW (17% of the electricity generation mix) from renewable energy sources. Efforts are being made to generate electricity from clean energy sources while implementing power generation projects with hydropower, coal and natural gas in a balanced manner.

According to the NEMP's annual power demand, the annual electricity consumption is 9 percent and above, and the nation's electricity demand will be met only if the annual electricity generation can be increased by about 500 megawatts, the Union Minister added.

He emphasized the needs to forge mutually beneficial processes by the private entrepreneurs, contributing to the country’s needs. This was followed by the speech of Union Minister for Cooperatives and Rural Development U Hla Moe.

He urged private companies to cooperate with the government to build solar energy power plants and improve the power generation.  He said that the works will be successful and beneficial for the state as well through open discussions from all aspects.

Next, the officials from 6 solar power plants and 9 solar power plant projects under construction reported the works undertaking and difficulties encountered respectively. The Union Minister supplemented the needs upon the reports and delivered a closing remark.
