Introduction Course on WTO: MoC Union Minister addressed the opening ceremony

The opening ceremony of Introduction Course on WTO (Principles and General Rules) was held at the Ministry of Commerce in Nay Pyi Taw on Monday.

At the ceremony, Union Minister for Commerce U Tun Ohn made an opening speech saying that Myanmar joined the World Trade Organization in 1995, and the Ministry of Commerce is the focal Ministry for the World Trade Organization. As the Ministry deals with international trade matters, the Introduction Course on WTO (Principles and General Rules) is needed to open with the aims to know the activities and basic rules of world trade organization, multilateral agreements, the commitments to be followed in implementations, disputed issues, and technical support.

He said that the WTO was set the rules of non-discrimination and transparency among the member countries at the beginning and they added Fair Competition, Environmental Preservation in multinational trade based on the inclusive issues later on the period of the globalization.

In accordance with the WTO’s commitment to transparency, Myanmar has carried out the notification of trade methods as well as the trade policy review process for 2 times in 2014 and 2021, he added. And Union Minister urged trainees to study hard in training to assist their ministry in dealing with issues of World Trade Organization. The ceremony was attended by Director Genrals, Deputy Director Generals and 35 trainees. the training will be given by the senior officials those who have served as WTO ambassadors of the Office of the Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization, and who have attended the training as an intern at the World Trade Organization (headquarters) in Geneva, Switzerland.
