Japanese Emperor Naruhito formally proclaimed his enthronement on Tuesday in a centuries-old ritual attended by dignitaries from more than 180 countries. Naruhito, 59, and Empress Masako, 55, took over in May in a brief, tradition-filled ceremony.

Tuesday's events are the high point of succession rituals that began in May when Naruhito succeeded the Chrysanthemum Throne after the abdication of his father, Akihito. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe delivered a congratulatory speech before guests including Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam, US Transport Secretary Elaine Chao, the UK's Prince Charles, and other leaders and royals.

His proclamation ceremony is largely meant to allow the government to showcase the monarchy to win public support and to preserve Japan's cultural heritage.
