On Monday, US and South Korean defense chiefs met for a key military agreement against North Korea for the first time in a decade.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is in Seoul for an annual security meeting with his South Korean counterpart Shin Won-sik.At the Meeting, the defense chiefs revised the Tailored Deterrence Strategy, a deal on joint deterrence strategies to counter North Korea's nuclear weapons and other arms.

First adopted in 2013, the allies had been working to update the document to better reflect Pyongyang's rapidly advancing nuclear and missile threats. This year, Seoul and Washington have staged joint military exercises involving advanced stealth jets and US strategic assets.

The top officials agreed to work closely to "expand the scale and types of field exercises" in line with combined trainings next year, according to the joint statement.
