The report disseminated by Mizzima media alleging the death of a female inmate due to kidney failure at Mandalay Hospital on February 4th, because of inadequate treatment within the prison, has been refuted by an official from the Prison Department.
According to the official, the inmate, Ma Yin Moe, was serving a sentence for destructive acts. Contrary to the misleading information, the official provided a detailed account of the medical treatment the inmate received, emphasizing the adherence to prison procedures. She was transferred from Mandalay to Myinchan Prison for treatment at the prison hospital from July 1st to 10th, 2023.
Following this, she was transferred to Myinchan District People’s Hospital, where she received treatment until her discharge on July 21st, 2023, with a recommendation for further treatment at Mandalay General Hospital.
Subsequently, she was transferred from Myinchan to Mandalay Prison on August 7th, 2023, and admitted to Mandalay Hospital on September 14th, 2023. Despite undergoing treatment by specialists and being hospitalized five times, she passed away on February 4th, 2024, due to kidney failure.
The official emphasized that according to Prison Law, sick inmates are entitled to necessary medical treatment, including treatment at the Prison Hospital and transfer to People’s Hospital if required. Moreover, inmates cannot request discharge from the hospital due to security concerns.
