In celebration of the 77th Union Day anniversary, an inauguration of a new 7-storey annex building was held at the Yangon General Hospital on Sunday.

The ceremony, graced by the presence of Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, commenced with the formal ribbon-cutting ceremony by Union Minister for Health Dr Thet Khaing Win, Union Minister for Construction U Myo Thant and Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein.

Following the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing unveiled the new annex facility of the hospital. As part of the ceremony, the Prime Minister and party sprinkled scented water on the stone inscription of the facility. They then took a tour of the newly inaugurated 7-storey building which comprised with an X-Ray Room, Laboratories, Hematology, and Medical Wards.

In the subsequent ceremony, the Prime Minister underscored the critical importance of qualified human resources in the development of a modern and prosperous nation, with a particular emphasis on the pivotal role played by the health sector.

Since February 2021, when the State Administration Council assumed responsibility, significant strides have been taken to construct new health facilities and expand existing ones, including accommodation facilities for healthcare staff. The Prime Minister emphasized that despite the government's efforts to improve healthcare services, the public's access to better healthcare remains hindered by various disturbances and obstacles.

Calling for actions that prioritize the nation's well-being and its people, he urged a concerted effort towards the betterment of the country. This was followed by screening of video clip regarding the new 7-storey annex building, and handing of related documents.

Established in 1873 as 483-bed facility, Yangon General Hospital has been upgraded in successive eras, and it reached 2,000-bed facility in 2016. Construction of new 7-storey annex building was initiated since 2015, but the project was delayed due to various circumstances. The opening of new facility could help render better health care services to the public, with international standard.
