Co-hosts New Zealand won their first ever Women’s World Cup match on Thursday as they beat Norway 1-0 in the opening game of the 2023 tournament.

It was the country's first-ever win at the World Cup and came in front of more than 42,000 in Auckland, the biggest crowd in New Zealand football history.

Before the kickoff, both New Zealand and Norway players, and the fans in the stadium have observed a minute of silence over the Auckland shooting that killed at least two people, and injured six others.

The 2023 Women's World Cup will run through Aug. 20.
