Peter Pellegrini wins the presidential election

The Slovak populist government's ally Peter Pellegrini, has won the presidential election, according to an almost complete count of the ballots. Mr Pellegrini received more than 53% of the vote against less than 47% for pro-European diplomat Ivan Korcok.

He will replace outgoing President Zuzana Caputova and will be sworn in on June 15. Pellegrini was prime minister from 2018 to 2020 and also undertook stints as the acting minister of health, finance and interior while head of government.
