El Salvador's Navy arrested nine people, six Ecuadorians and three Guatemalans who were sailing on a boat with 1,480 kilos of cocaine in the Pacific Ocean on 27th of March. According to the Defense Minister Rene Merino, the seized drugs are worth $37 million.

Although the cocaine trade in El Salvador may be small in comparison to other countries, it is growing and has become a considerable source of conflict and violence. Criminal networks, including gangs, are actively involved in cocaine transportation.
