Pilot agricultural census: MoALI UM attended the launching ceremony

The ceremony of launching a pilot enumeration agricultural census was held at the training hall of Yayzin Agricultural University in the morning on April 22 and was attended by the Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Min Naung, Chairman of Nay Pyi Taw Council U Than Tun Oo, Deputy Ministers, Nay Pyi Taw Council members and departmental officials and the students from Yayzin Agricultural University, University of Veterinary Science and Institute of Agriculture (Pyinmana) who will take part in the pilot enumeration of agricultural census.

Speaking on the occasion, the Union Minister said that as the agriculture can accomplish depending on the favorable geographical features and natural resources of the country where there are multi forms of climate, the State policies were set based on the agriculture in consecutive eras. For the uplifting of agriculture and livestock breeding which are the major living occupation of the rural population, the State Administration Council set the economic objectives: to enhance development based on agriculture and livestock-inclusive of entire ethnic people to ensure prosperity and food security of the nation using modern production techniques and to strengthen all-round development in other sectors of the economy and is implementing.

In the process of Agricultural Census enumeration once on every ten years of the world countries, the Department of Agricultural Land Management and Statistics (DALMS) under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation implemented in 1953, 1993, 2003 and 2010 with the technical assistance of FAO in line with the World Census of Agriculture Guidelines.

A total of 208 countries participated in World Census of Agriculture 2020 Round. Among them, 107 countries completed the process due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 27 countries under implementation and 74 countries including Myanmar remained to be done. The trial enumeration prior to the nationwide census without the international technical assistance with three sets of questions verified by FAO will be conducted under self-reliance etc.

Next, the Director General U Thet Naing Oo of the Department of Agricultural Land Management and Statistics clarified the history of the pilot enumeration of agricultural census and the major objectives of the agricultural census enumeration project.

After that, the enumerators from the Department of Agricultural Land Management and Statistics and the groups comprised of the students from Yayzin Agricultural University, University of Veterinary Science and Institute of Agriculture (Pyinmana) left to the designated locations where the pilot enumeration of agricultural census will be conducted.
