Rural Development: Solar System Electrification Project In Taninthayi Region

Department of Rural Development under the Ministry of Cooperatives and Development of Rural Areas is implementing the rural electrification project with the use of two solar-powered systems.

In Taninthayi Region, the electricity distribution to the villages have been carried out by means of solar home system and solar mini-grids system.

Director, Department of Rural Development (Taninthayi), Ye Khaung said “In Taninthayi region, we supply electricity to the whole village with two solar systems. They are solar home system and solar mini-grids system. With the goal of “Universal Access of Electricity by 2030”, the department is making efforts for electrification in the region. And the electrification for schools, clinics and lamp posts are being carried out without any fees.”

During five years period from 2016 to date, over 500 villages have been electrified through solar home system and more than 30 villages through solar mini-grid system.

Director, Department of Rural Development (Taninthayi), Ye Khaung said “From 2016-2017 to 2020-2021 fiscal years, the department implemented the projects to supply electricity for 530 villages, which cover over 30,000 households, 378 schools, 87 clinics and over 2,500 lamp posts with solar home system. And also, electrification to 31 villages, over 10,000 households, 41 schools, 27 clinics and over 2,400 lamp posts were implemented free of charge through solar mini-grids system in 2016-2017 to date.”

At present, the department is being implemented the solar-powered project in 3 villages of the region.
