Bulgarian Orthodox Easter, called Velik Den (Great Day), celebrated on 5th May is one of the most important holidays in Bulgaria. Coloured eggs and Easter bread, called “kozunak”, are the main symbols of Easter. The cracking of the eggs is also a tradition in Bulgaria.
It starts in the first minutes of Easter Sunday. People take turns breaking their decorated eggs against the eggs of others. The owner of the last unbroken egg is the winner and is believed to have good luck, health and prosperity for the next year. Easter Sunday is celebrated with a large family meal.
